Community socioeconomic deprivation and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease severity
Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition Mar 04, 2020
Orkin S, Brokamp C, Yodoshi T, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective study to assess the distribution of socioeconomic deprivation, measured utilizing an area-level proxy, in pediatric patients with known nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and to ascertain if the deprivation is correlated with liver disease severity. The sample consisted of patients < 21 years with NAFLD, followed from 2009 to 2018. Children with NAFLD have been found across the deprivation spectrum. While children from more deprived neighborhoods present at a younger age, they display the same degree of severity of NAFLD as their peers from less deprived areas. MRI-measured fat fraction and liver stiffness, as well as histologic features, were not varied between the high- and low-deprivation groups.
