Common causes of outpatient CT and MRI callback examinations: Opportunities for improvement
American Journal of Roentgenology Jan 08, 2020
Liles AL, et al. - Researchers analyzed all consecutive outpatient CT and MRI callback examinations from October 2015 to October 2017 in four radiology subspecialties (cardiothoracic imaging, abdominal imaging, neuroradiology, musculoskeletal imaging) at an academic quaternary care center, in order to examine factors driving callback MRI and CT examinations and to discern possibilities for optimizing the individuals experience by decreasing future callbacks. There were 194 callbacks among 147,068 MRI and 195,578 CT examinations. The callback rate for MRI was approximately nine times that of CT. The callback rate was greatest for musculoskeletal radiology. It was found that outpatient callback examinations were not common, occur more often for MRI in compare with CT, and were usually preventable. Moreover, callback proclivities likely differ among attending radiologists. Perhaps targeted improvement efforts mitigate callbacks.
