Combined vitamin C, hydrocortisone, and thiamine therapy for patients with severe pneumonia who were admitted to the intensive care unit: Propensity score-based analysis of a before-after cohort study
Journal of Critical Care Jul 12, 2018
Kim WY, et al. - Researchers investigated whether treatment with combined vitamin C, hydrocortisone, and thiamine therapy is efficacious in patients with severe pneumonia. They performed comparisons between consecutive patients with severe pneumonia who were treated with the vitamin C protocol (6 g of vitamin C per day) in June 2017–January 2018 vs consecutive patients with severe pneumonia who were treated in June 2016–January 2017. They used propensity score analysis to adjust for potential baseline differences between the groups. They found significantly less hospital mortality in the treated patients vs the control group in the propensity-matched cohort. Overall, patients with severe pneumonia may be benefitted with combined vitamin C, hydrocortisone, and thiamine therapy.
