Combined use of ICG and technetium does not improve sentinel lymph node detection in endometrial cancer: Results of the COMBITEC study
Gynecologic Oncology May 18, 2021
Cabrera S, Barahona-Orpinell M, Almansa-González C, et al. - Since scarce evidence exists regarding the advantage of integrating technetium ( 99m Tc) and indocyanine green (ICG) for sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy in endometrial cancer, researchers herein compared the overall as well as bilateral pelvic identification rates of SLNs in two retrospective cohorts: ICG exclusive vs combined ICG+ 99m Tc. This analysis involved 180 patients, 51% (n = 92) in ICG group and 49% (n = 88) in ICG+ 99m Tc group. The overall detection rate was estimated to be 92.8% without significant variations between groups. In terms of bilateral pelvic and aortic mapping rate, no significant differences were noted. Findings showed that no improvement in SLN detection in endometrial cancer was obtained after combining preoperative 99m Tc to intraoperative ICG, but longer procedures resulted from implementing this strategy.
