Combined oral contraceptive use increases the risk of VTE after knee arthroscopy and ACL reconstruction: An analysis of 64,165 patients in the Truven database
Arthroscopy Oct 27, 2020
Traven SA, Farley KX, Gottschalk MB, et al. - In this study, researchers used the Truven MarketScan database in order to determine the incidence of VTE, including DVT and PE, in patients undergoing simple knee arthroscopy and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. In addition, they evaluated combined oral contraceptive (COCP) use as a potential risk factor for VTE in patients undergoing knee arthroscopy. The MarketScan database yielded data of 64,165 patients for inclusion in this study. Analysis revealed correlation of using COCP with an increased risk for a symptomatic DVT or PE after knee arthroscopy and an increased risk for DVT, but not PE, after ACL reconstruction. Further, patients with multiple risk factors present such as tobacco use, obesity, and COCP use exhibited higher odds ratios than the sum of the individual risk factors alone.
