Combined malnutrition and frailty significantly increases complications and mortality in patient’s undergoing elective total hip arthroplasty

Journal of Arthroplasty May 22, 2020

Wilson JM, Schwartz AM, Farley KX, et al. - This study was attempted to assess the individual and combined influence of malnutrition and frailty in the elective total hip arthroplasty (THA) patient. Researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study to distinguish patients undergoing elective, primary THA from the American College of Surgeons-National Surgery Quality Improvement Program database. They excluded patients with hip fracture. A total of 105,997 individuals who underwent THA were distinguished for inclusion. This study's findings demonstrate that frailty and malnutrition both represent physiologically compromised states but are only weakly associated. It was shown that in the THA patient, the concurrent presence of frailty and malnutrition has significant detrimental impacts. Future study is needed to delineate to what degree these risk factors are modifiable.
