Combined malnutrition and frailty significantly increases complications and mortality in patients undergoing elective total hip arthroplasty

Wilson JM, Schwartz AM, Farley KX, et al. - The present study was conducted to assess the individual and combined influence of malnutrition and frailty in the elective total hip arthroplasty (THA) patient. Researchers performed a retrospective cohort study to distinguish patients undergoing elective, primary THA from the American College of Surgeons-National Surgery Quality Improvement Program database. They obtained demographic and complication data, and conducted a statistical analysis comparing complications between cohorts. They distinguished 105,997 individuals undergoing THA for inclusion. It was demonstrated that frailty and malnutrition both represent physiologically compromised states but are only weakly correlated. In the THA patient, the concurrent presence of frailty and malnutrition has significant detrimental impacts. Future studies are needed to delineate to what degree these risk factors are modifiable.
