Combined epidural-general anaesthesia vs general anaesthesia in neonatal gastrointestinal surgery: A randomized controlled trial
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Oct 16, 2019
Gannam-Somri L, Matter I, Hadjittofi C, et al. - In this randomized controlled trial, researchers examined 60 neonates who had gastrointestinal surgery at a university hospital in order to find out if combined epidural-general anaesthesia was related to expedited gastrointestinal function recovery in this population. Combined epidural-general anaesthesia was delivered to 30 neonates and the remaining 30 received general anaesthesia alone. Postoperative time to tolerance of full enteral nutrition was assessed as the primary outcome, and postoperative time defaecation, the duration of nasogastric drainage, and infections were evaluated as secondary outcomes. They documented expedited gastrointestinal function recovery and a lower infection risk following gastrointestinal surgery in neonates in correlation with the use of combined epidural-general anaesthesia.
