Combined deep penetrating nevi of the conjunctiva are relatively common lesions characterised by BRAFV600E mutation and activation of the beta catenin pathway: A clinicopathological analysis of 34 lesions

British Journal of Ophthalmology Oct 04, 2019

Šekoranja D, et al. - As deep penetrating nevus (DPN) is not a widely recognized conjunctive lesion and only a few cases consistent with combined DPN have been reported, researchers identified melanocytic nevi morphologically consistent with DPN by performing a review of all excised and histopathologically diagnosed conjunctival melanocytic lesions between 2003 and 2018. They identified 34 DPN among 361 histopathologically examined conjunctival nevi, including 33 combined with a common nevus and 1 pure DPN. Findings suggested that DPN of the conjunctiva is a relatively common lesion that typically occurs as a combined nevus. Genetically, a combination of BRAFV600E mutation and beta catenin pathway activation characterizes the conjunctiva DPN. Recognition of the conjunctiva's DPN is important to avoid overdiagnosing it as melanoma and to explain its potential atypical clinical characteristics. The conjunctiva DPN appears to be a benign lesion.
