Combined culture and metagenomic analyses reveal significant shifts in the composition of the cutaneous microbiome in psoriasis
British Journal of Dermatology May 18, 2019
Langan EA, et al. - In this prospective analysis of 20 healthy controls and 23 patients with psoriasis, researchers focused on characterization as well as comparison of the cutaneous microbiome in controls and cases using metagenomic analyses. They also analyzed alterations in the microbiome during treatment. Findings revealed that cutaneous microbiome in psoriasis showed changes, especially during treatment. An increased abundance of Firmicutes and a corresponding attenuation in Actinobacteria was seen in relation to psoriasis, these changes were most remarkably evident in lesional skin, and at least partially reversed during systemic treatment. By skin site and microenvironment, variations were seen in the composition of the microbial communities. A significant association of Prevotella and Staphylococcus with lesional skin was observed. A relation of Anaerococcus and Propionibacterium with nonlesional skin was also evident.
