Combination of alcohol and cigarette smoke induces endoplasmic reticulum stress and cell death in pancreatic acinar cells
Gastroenterology Aug 30, 2017
Lugea A, et al. – This research aspired to investigate whether smoking influenced the adaptive mechanisms induced by alcohol and accelerates disorders of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in pancreatic acinar cells. By suppressing the adaptive unfolded protein response signaling pathway, cigarette smoke promoted cell death and features of pancreatitis in ethanol–sensitized acinar cells. Also, it activated ER stress pathways that promoted acinar cell death.
