Colorectal cancer screening with faecal immunochemical testing, sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy: A microsimulation modelling study
BMJ Oct 09, 2019
Buskermolen M, Cenin DR, Helsingen LM, et al. - Through a microsimulation modelling study of Norwegian men and women aged 50-79 years with differing 15-year colorectal cancer risk (1-7%, a public health problem, with an estimated 1.4 million new cases and 700,000 deaths globally in 2018), experts determined advantages and harms of various colorectal cancer screening approaches, stratified by (baseline) 15-year colorectal cancer risk. Over a 15 year period, all screening approaches could overcome colorectal cancer mortality to a comparable extent. Colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy may also decrease the incidence of colorectal cancer, while the fecal immunochemical test explicated a smaller incidence decrease. Moreover, for all screening approaches, harms were rare and of comparable magnitude.
