Colorectal cancer incidence and mortality after removal of adenomas during screening colonoscopies
Gastroenterology Oct 03, 2019
Wieszczy P, Kaminski MF, Franczyk R, et al. - Through a multicenter population-based cohort study of 236,089 people who underwent screening colonoscopies with adequate bowel cleansing and cecum intubation at 132 centers in the Polish National Colorectal Cancer Screening Program, from 2000 through 2011, researchers intended to make a risk classification system on the basis of colorectal cancer incidence and mortality after adenoma removal. One hundred and thirty colorectal cancers in individuals who had adenomas removed at screening vs 309 in individuals without adenomas were recognized. Thus, a risk classification system was made using data from the Polish National Colorectal Cancer Screening Program, that would decrease the number of people classified as high risk and need intensive surveillance more than threefold, without raising the risk of colorectal cancer in patients with adenomas. Moreover, this system may optimize the use of surveillance colonoscopy.
