Colorectal cancer among gout patients undergoing colonoscopy
Journal of Clinical Rheumatology Dec 04, 2019
Slobodnick A, et al. - In this study of 581 gouts and 598 osteoarthritis individuals with documented colonoscopies, experts evaluated the association between gout and colorectal cancer in a population of veterans. In gout vs people with osteoarthritis, the 10-year prevalence of colorectal cancer was markedly lower. In colorectal cancer rates, disparities remained important following stratifying for NSAIDs use. Among gout individuals, colorectal cancer occurrence was not affected by the use of colchicine and/or allopurinol and the presence/absence of concomitant osteoarthritis. On subanalysis, between gout and osteoarthritis people, among those who underwent diagnostic and not screening colonoscopy, differences in colorectal cancer occurrence continued. No important variation in nonmalignant colorectal polyp occurrence between gout and osteoarthritis individuals was noted. Thus, in comparison with individuals with osteoarthritis, people with gout had declined colonoscopy-documented occurrence of colorectal cancer, implying a potential shielding influence.
