Bashashati M, et al. – This meta–analysis aimed to compare immune cell counts in colonic biopsies of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients and controls. Compared to non–inflamed controls, mast cells and CD3+ T cells were increased in colonic biopsies of patients with IBS. These changes were segmental and sometimes IBS–subtype dependent. The diagnostic value of the quantification of colonic mucosal cells in IBS needed additional research.
