Colon cancer as a subsequent malignant neoplasm in young adults
Cancer Jul 17, 2019
Teng A, et al. - Whether the survival of colon cancer (CC) is lower among younger patients (aged <50 years) who developed CC as a subsequent malignant neoplasm (SMN) vs those with primary CC, was investigated in this study utilizing National Cancer Data Base (2004-2014). This study included a total of 41,915 patients, of those, colon SMNs were present in 2852 (6.8%). More patients with colon SMNs were aged 40 to 49 years vs those with primary CC. In younger patients, an earlier stage of presentation as well as more aggressive surgical treatment was reported for colon SMNs vs primary CCs. Reduced survival was observed in patients with SMNs of the colon, although a survival benefit of chemotherapy was also evident.
