Colon cancer as a subsequent malignant neoplasm in young adults
Cancer Aug 01, 2019
Teng A, Nelson DW, Dehal A, et al. - Using the National Cancer Data Base, researchers analyzed patients aged < 50 years with colon cancer (CC) to determine survival in younger patients with CC as a subsequent malignant neoplasm (SMN) vs those with primary CC. They focused on the influence of SMN status on overall survival. This study included overall 41,915 patients, among whom 6.8% had colon SMNs. An earlier stage at presentation and more aggressive surgical management were reported for colon SMNs in younger patients vs primary CCs. The location of the occurrence of colon SMNs was more commonly the right colon, while primary CC showed a higher prevalence in the sigmoid colon. Decreased survival was reported in patients with SMNs of the colon; however, chemotherapy may offer a survival benefit.
