Cohort study examining the association between blood pressure and cardiovascular events in patients with peripheral artery disease
Journal of the American Heart Association Mar 14, 2019
Manapurathe DT, et al. - Researchers examined a prospectively recruited patient cohort with peripheral artery disease to determine the relationship between systolic blood pressure (SBP) and cardiovascular events in these patients. Overall, this study included 2,773 patients. They classified the participants based on the SBP at recruitment (≤120 mm Hg, n=604; 121–140 mm Hg, n=1,065; and >140 mm Hg, n=1,104). They also performed adjusted Cox proportional hazards analyses. In this cohort study, an increased risk of major cardiovascular events (myocardial infarction, stroke, or cardiovascular death) was observed in patients with peripheral artery disease and SBP ≤120 mm Hg. In this patient group, caution should be exercised with intensive SBP lowering.
