Cognitive resilience among APOE ε4 carriers in the oldest old

International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Aug 22, 2019

Hayden KM, Gaussoin SA, Hunter JC, et al. - From the Women's Health Initiative Memory Study (WHIMS), researchers examined a large sample of resilient APOE ε4+ women for the sociodemographic characteristics. Further, they compared these women to non-carriers and APOE ε4+ women who developed cognitive impairment (CI) before age 80. They recruited women for clinical trials evaluating postmenopausal hormone therapy and the incidence of dementia. Among 5,716 women, they identified 557 APOE ε4+ women. The analysis revealed higher baseline self-rated general health and cognitive scores among those who survived to age 80+ without CI vs those who did not reach age 80 without CI. APOE ε4+ groups were similar regarding baseline high total cholesterol and LDL levels, however, these levels were higher when compared with APOE ε4- women. A history of high total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol was more frequently reported for APOE ε4+ women among women who survived to 80+ without CI. Baseline cognitive function and general health are thus identified as significant for late-life cognition among ε4+ women.
