Cognitive function trajectories and their determinants in older people: 8 years of follow-up in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing
Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health Apr 29, 2018
Zaninotto P, et al. - In a large nationally representative sample of older people in England, researchers analyzed age trajectories of cognitive decline using latent growth curve modelling. They also investigated the factors that impact such decline and if these differed by gender. Potential determinants, including modifiable risk factors, of cognitive decline were identified. Women vs men showed significantly less decline in memory, executive function and global cognitive function, after adjustment. In all cognitive function domains, faster rates of decline were predicted by increasing age and dementia. In men only, decline in some cognitive function domains was predicted by depression and alcohol consumption. In both genders, an association of poor physical function, physical inactivity and smoking with faster rates of decline in specific cognitive domains was seen.
