Cognitive function in children with idiopathic subclinical hypothyroidism: Effects of 2 years of levothyroxine therapy
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Feb 05, 2020
Capalbo D, Alfano S, Polizzi M, et al. - Researchers evaluated the effects of levothyroxine (L-T4) therapy on neurocognitive outcomes in a cohort of children with subclinical hypothyroidism (SH) in this 2-year, case-control prospective study. They recruited 34 children, aged 9.1±2.6 years, with long-lasting, idiopathic and mild SH and 34 healthy matched controls. A 2-year L-T4 treatment was provided to 20 SH children (group A), whereas 14 SH children declined to undergo treatment (group B). All children were evaluated at study entry and after two years of therapy or observation for intellectual quotient (IQ) and specific cognitive. As per data gained, children do not exhibit impairment in neurocognitive function in correlation to persistent, mild untreated SH and 2-year L-T4 supplementation does not affect this function significantly.
