Cognitive function during exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Internal Medicine Journal Feb 23, 2019
Poot B, et al. - In chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients, researchers assessed the prevalence and time course of cognitive impairment during and following hospital admission due to an exacerbation of COPD. Between October 2013 and November 2014, patients admitted to hospital with an exacerbation of COPD were given the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) tool, COPD assessment test (CAT), and modified BORG dyspnea scale within 24 hours of admission, between 48 and 72 hours after admission and 6 weeks post discharge. Among 25 participating patients, cognitive impairment was very prevalent in hospital admissions with COPD exacerbation. While impairment improves over time, return to a normal range is only seen in a minority. Physicians should keep in mind this will impact the ability of patients to comprehend and recall hospital information and adhere to medication regimes.
