Cognitive function after surgery with regional or general anesthesia: A population-based study
Alzheimer's and Dementia Sep 11, 2019
Sprung J, Schulte PJ, Knopman DS, et al. – Researchers determined if surgery performed with regional anesthesia (RA) is linked to accelerated long-term cognitive decline comparable with that previously reported following general anesthesia (GA) in a cohort of 1,819 older adults. Longitudinal cognitive function was assessed in all participants. In participants exposed to RA or GA, models evaluated the rate of change in global and domain-specific cognition over time. Investigators found that older adults undergoing RA surgery experienced a decline in global cognition similar to those receiving GA, but memory was not affected.
