Cognitive changes associated with mentally active lifestyle and structured cognitive programs: A 2-year longitudinal study
Aging and Mental Health Jul 15, 2019
Tang JYM, et al. - Researchers conducted a 2-year prospective cohort study with 1,793 healthy older adults examining how cognitive changes are influenced by a mentally active lifestyle and structured cognitive programs. In the cognitive program, they recorded mentally active lifestyle and participation and assessed cognitive function using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. Screening for physical frailty was done for its possible effect on cognition. Outcomes revealed better cognition in correlation to both a mentally active lifestyle and structured cognitive programs. Additive effects were seen with structured cognitive programs to the benefits of a mentally active lifestyle; the programs also predicted cognitive changes, regardless of lifestyle.
