Coffee consumption and cardiovascular diseases and mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes: A systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of cohort studies

Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases May 28, 2021

Shahinfar H, Jayedi A, Khan TA, et al. - By analyzing prospective cohort studies assessing the link of coffee intake with risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) as well as mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes, researchers herein sought to determine the long-term results of coffee consumption in patients suffering from type 2 diabetes. The included studies were identified from PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Sciences. Overall, ten prospective cohort studies comprising 82,270 cases, were analyzed. Relative to those with no coffee intake, the hazard ratios for drinking 4 cups/d were estimated to be 0.79, 0.60, 0.68, 0.72, and 0.77 for all-cause mortality, CVD mortality, coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality, CHD, and for total CVD events, respectively. Overall, a likely inverse association of coffee consumption with the risk of mortality was concluded in patients with type 2 diabetes. However, there is a requirement for more inquiry taking into account the type of coffee, sugar and cream added to coffee, and history of CVD to offer more confident findings.
