Coffee and tea consumption in relation to risk of rheumatoid arthritis in the Women's Health Initiative Observational cohort

Journal of Clinical Rheumatology Apr 03, 2019

Lamichhane D, et al. – Via data analysis of the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study, researchers assessed the association of tea or coffee consumption with the risk of older-onset rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A total of 185 women self-reported and validated incident cases of RA were observed after 3 years of observation. There was no improvement in the hazard ratio for incident RA in participants who drank coffee vs those who did not. Furthermore, no alteration in the risk of incident RA with the amount of coffee consumed and the method of preparation (caffeinated/decaffeinated; filtered/unfiltered) was identified. However, a positive relationship between incident RA and caffeinated tea consumption was evident. The investigators concluded a small correlation between daily caffeinated, non-herbal tea consumption and incident RA.
