Cochlear implant outcomes in patients with severe compared with profound hearing loss
Otology & Neurotology Mar 22, 2020
Birman CS, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to contrast the speech perception outcomes for patients with preoperative severe vs profound hearing loss with a cochlear implant (CI). Adult cochlear implant recipients (16 yr and above) who undergo surgery between 2008 and 2015 with speech perception results and four frequency averaged severe (70–89 dBHL) or profound (90 dBHL and above) hearing loss. According to findings, adult CI recipients have shown marked improvements in CI speech perception. Compared with profound hearing loss patients, those with severe hearing loss have significantly better outcomes. Such results can inform CI candidacy evaluation criteria.
