Co-prescription patterns of cardiovascular preventive treatments: A cross-sectional study in the Aragon worker’ health study (Spain)
BMJ Open Apr 19, 2019
Aguilar-Palacio I, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, researchers identified preventive combinations of cardiovascular disease (CVD) treatments, including with other drugs, and determined their prevalence in a Spanish cohort of 4,605 workers from the Aragon Workers’ Health Study who, in 2014, had ≥ 3 prescriptions of the same therapeutic subgroup. Antihypertensives were the most prescribed treatment for CVD. Agents acting on the renin-angiotensin system and lipid-lowering drugs were the most frequent association observed among CVD preventive treatment. With respect to the association between CVD preventive treatments and other drugs, lipid-lowering drugs and drugs used for acid-related disorders were the most frequently observed pattern. Overall, the investigators concluded that there are a significant number of patterns of co-prescription involving preventive CVD treatments. With age, these patterns increase and are more common in men. Mining techniques are a useful tool for identifying pharmacological patterns that are not evident in individual clinical practice to enhance the appropriateness of prescribing drugs.
