Clustered arrivals of firearm-injured patients in an urban trauma system: A silent epidemic
Journal of the American College of Surgeons Apr 17, 2019
Beard JH, et al. - Using data from the Philadelphia Police Department registry of shootings from 2005-2015, researchers performed this descriptive epidemiologic study of the burden of firearm-injured patients (FIPs) clusters from an urban trauma system perspective. They identified 14,217 FIPs; of these, 22.1% were clustered. This suggests a common encounter to FIP clusters in the trauma system studied; these occur at similar rates as observed in other urban centers. Compared to the overall FIP population, clustered FIPs more frequently comprised females, were injured at night, but had died less frequently. As per findings, multiple FIPs (presenting within a short period of time) related immediate healthcare resources burden is not limited to traditionally defined mass shootings.
