Closure of radial forearm free flap donor site: A comparative study between keystone flap and skin graft
Head & Neck Oct 22, 2019
Potet P, et al. - In this investigation involving 101 patients, researchers examined the feasibility of radial forearm free flap (RFFF) donor site closure by keystone flap (KF) and compared its results to those of skin graft (SG) closure. The study sample consisted of patients who had RFFF for head and neck reconstruction (35 KF closure and 65 SG closure). Duration of wound healing and donor site complications have been gathered. Data reported that wound healing duration was longer after SG than after KF (32 days vs 18 days). There were no statistically different healing complications, esthetic and functional results. Findings suggested that forearm donor site closure by KF is a possible alternative to the traditional SG. Its main benefits are the reduced healing time for wounds and the avoidance of a second donor site.
