Clopidogrel use is not associated with increased complications after carotid endarterectomy
Journal of Vascular Surgery Aug 26, 2018
Sullivan TM, et al. - The use of clopidogrel at the time of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and its association with postoperative complications were evaluated via performing a retrospective review of a prospective database. Researchers analyzed 1066 consecutive patients (mean age, 72 years; 66% men) who underwent CEA from 2010 to 2017. Observations suggest an increase in clopidogrel use in the CEA practice over time with no increased risk of postoperative complications, including bleeding. Data thereby do not support considering clopidogrel discontinuation before CEA, hence clopidogrel should be considered part of “optimal medical therapy” in patients having CEA.
