Clinicopathological outcomes and prognosis of elderly patients (≥65 years) with gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs ) undergoing curative-intent resection: A multicenter data review
Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery Oct 18, 2018
Yang Z, et al. - Given that gastric GISTs (gGISTs) occur most often in elderly patients, researchers evaluated the clinicopathological features, treatment patterns, and prognosis among the elderly with gGISTs. Data from 1,846 patients with primary gGISTs who underwent curative-intent resection at 10 medical centers in China from 1998 to 2015 were retrospectively evaluated. Elderly patients with gGISTs are usually treated the same way as young patients with gGISTs. Compared to nonelderly gGIST patients, elderly gGIST patients had more comorbidities and postoperative complications and were less likely to receive postoperative adjuvant therapy. Further, a higher rate of tumor necrosis and worse disease-free survival and overall survival was noted among elderly vs young gGIST patients.
