Clinicopathological features of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and oropharynx in young patients
British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Apr 11, 2018
Martinez RCP, et al. - Experts assessed the clinicopathological features of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oral cavity and oropharynx in a group of young patients who were diagnosed during a 15-year period (2000–2014) and compared the results with those of a matching group of older patients. Findings suggested the male:female ratio to be 2:1, with more tumors located in the oral cavity than in the oropharynx. They noted human papillomavirus (HPV)-related SCC to be restricted to the oropharynx. Five-year overall survival was seen to be similar in young and matched older patients when matched for site, stage and HPV status. A similar disease profile of young patients with oral SCC and that of the older patients with the condition was seen.
