Clinicopathological features of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma with a diameter less than or equal to 5 mm
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery May 14, 2019
Yan L, et al. - Researchers assessed the clinical, epidemiological and histologic features papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) ≤5 mm prior to surgery. A total of 182 patients (141 females and 41 males; mean age 53.5) with small PTMCs participated in this retrospective study. Incidental diagnosis during pathological examination revealed most cases of small PTMCs, which were not diagnosed in the clinical examination. Researchers concluded that small PTMCs (≤5 mm) are frequently multifocal (21.4%) and bilateral with classical (47.5%) and the follicular (51.9%) variant of PTC, histologically. Consideration of regional lymph node involvement should be done as part of the clinical management of the patient, as small PTMC diagnosed incidentally can lead to regional lymph node involvement in a significant amount of cases.
