Clinicopathological features of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma with a diameter less than or equal to 5 mm

American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Jun 15, 2019

Yan L, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers evaluated the epidemiological, clinical and histologic features of incidentally identified and presurgically diagnosed papillary thyroid microcarcinomas less than or equal to 5 mm in size (small PTMC). From October 2003 to February 2018, cases were retrieved from pathology databases and their clinicopathological characteristics were reviewed. In total, there were 182 small PTMC cases (141 women and 41 men) and the mean age at diagnosis was 53.5. Findings revealed that most of the small PTMCs were not identified on clinical examination and workup and were diagnosed incidentally during the pathologic examination. According to findings, small PTMCs (≤5 mm) are often multifocal and bilateral and histology is commonly the classical as well as follicular PTC variant. Although often diagnosed incidentally small PTMC may lead to the involvement of regional lymph nodes in a significant portion of cases and evaluation of regional lymph nodes should be considered in these patients' clinical management.
