Clinicopathological characteristics of incidental parathyroidectomy after total thyroidectomy: The effect on hypocalcemia. A retrospective cohort study
International Journal of Surgery Jun 09, 2018
Vasileiadis I, et al. - The clinicopathological characteristics associated with incidental parathyroidectomy (IP) after total thyroidectomy were investigated in this retrospective cohort study including 2556 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy between 2002 and 2012 at a single tertiary institution. Compared to no-IP group, patients with IP demonstrated a higher risk of postoperative biochemical hypocalcemia and a higher risk of postoperative symptomatic hypocalcemia. Independent risk factors for IP included malignancy, tumor size >10mm, thyroid capsule invasion, extrathyroidal extension, lymph node metastases. Furthermore, central neck dissection, operation time, RLN injury and thyroid gland dimensions were also independent risk factors for IP.
