Clinicopathological characteristics and treatment outcomes of occult breast cancer: A SEER population-based study
Cancer Management and Research Oct 17, 2018
Ge LP, et al. - Researchers used 2004-2014 Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database and studied the clinicopathological characteristics and treatment recommendations for occult breast cancer (OBC). They analyzed data for 479 OBC patients and 115,739 non-OBC patients. Findings showed that, clinicopathological characteristics of OBC were unique and OBC carried a favorable prognosis vs non-OBC. Compared to non-OBC patients, OBC patients tended to be older, displayed a more advanced stage, a higher rate of negative estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor status, a higher rate of HER2-positive status, and a higher rate of ≥10 positive lymph nodes, and were less likely to undergo surgical treatment. For OBC patients, survival benefit of breast-conserving surgery (BCS) plus axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) and radiotherapy was found to be similar to that seen with mastectomy.
