Kang HJ, Oh JH, Kim YW, et al. - The present study was conducted to evaluate clinicopathological and molecular characterization of chromophobe hepatocellular carcinoma. Researchers conducted whole-exome sequencing, copy number variation, and transcriptomic analyses in 224 surgically resected hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cases to comprehensively define chromophobe HCC. Alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT) was evaluated by using telomere-specific fluorescence in situ hybridization. They compared genomic profiles and ALT status with clinicopathological features among subtypes of HCC, especially chromophobe HCC and conventional HCC. The results imply that with a prevalence of ~10%, chromophobe HCC is a unique subtype of HCC. It was shown that chromophobe HCC is correlated with female predominance and ALT in comparison with conventional HCC, although overall and recurrence-free outcomes are similar to conventional HCC.
