Clinicopathologic features and outcomes of gastrointestinal stromal tumors arising from the esophagus and gastroesophageal junction
Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology Jul 26, 2018
Briggler AM, et al. - Researchers determined the clinicopathological features and outcomes of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) arising from the esophagus and gastroesophageal junction (GEJ). In patients treated at their institution, as well as 28 cases from the Mayo Clinic Cancer Registry from 1997 to 2016, and 1,010 cases from the National Cancer Database (NCDB) between 2004 and 2014, they analyzed the survival as well. They found an association of metastatic disease with increased mitotic count and increased tumor size among esophageal and GEJ GISTs. Inferior overall survival was observed among men. Findings offered validation for the Joensuu risk criteria to be used to risk stratify esophageal and GEJ GISTs.
