Clinicopathologic factors related to surgical margin involvement, reoperation, and residual cancer in primary operable breast cancer- An analysis of 2050 patients
European Journal of Surgical Oncology Aug 09, 2018
Lai HW, et al. - Researchers investigated if, in primary operable breast cancer, clinicopathologic factors are associated with surgical margin involvement, reoperation, and residual cancer. Researchers identified positive surgical margins in 151 (7.4%) patients in a cohort of 2,050 women who had either breast-conserving surgery (BCS) or mastectomy for primary operable breast cancer. Increased risk for positive surgical margin involvement was linked to lower body mass index, larger tumor size, pathologic evidence of multifocal disease, and no preoperative MRI evaluation. Reoperation and residual cancer detection at re-excision were more frequently observed with ductal carcinoma in situ with positive surgical margins.
