Clinicopathologic characteristics of paranasal sinus fungus ball: Retrospective, multicenter study in Korea
European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology Feb 29, 2020
Kim DW, Kim YM, Min JY, et al. - Via retrospectively analyzing data on 1,362 patients, researchers contrasted the clinical features of Korean adult patients with fungus ball (FB) and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) without FB. Participants in the study were patients (147 FB and 1,215 CRS) who had endoscopic sinus surgery at nine Korean medical centers in 2005, 2010, and 2016. The prevalence of FB was evaluated and contrasted clinical features of FB and CRS. FB prevalence was significantly higher in 2016 (15.9%) than in the other years (7.8% in 2005 and 7.5% in 2010). Nasal obstruction was the most common main complaint related to CRS and FB. FB is commonly found with increased prevalence in older women. FB had a clinical presentation, radiological findings, and prognosis differing from CRS.
