Clinicopathologic characteristics and survival of patients with gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasm (GEPNEN) in a multi-ethnic Asian institution
Neuroendocrinology Dec 14, 2018
Tai WM, et al. - A retrospective chart analysis of cases diagnosed with a gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasm (GEPNEN) at a tertiary medical institution at Singhealth Outram Campus, Singapore between 1995 and 2015 to assess the clinicopathologic aspects of GEPNEN in a multi-ethnic Asian group, was done. Researchers involved 295 subjects including Chinese (74.6%), Malay (4.4%), Indian (9.5%) and other (11.5%) ethnic backgrounds with a median age of 59. Pancreas (38.6%), rectum (19.7%) and stomach (9.5%) were the most common primary tumor sites. The prognostic factors of overall survival (OS) were the age at diagnosis, disease stage, and grading. At diagnosis, Malay patients were younger (median 42 years) than Chinese (60 years). Subjects with an esophageal neuroendocrine neoplasm (NEN) (66 years) were older than appendiceal NEN (48 years) with a median OS for all GEPNEN of 10.2 years. They also found racial variations in primary tumor site and age of diagnosis.
