Clinically ascertained health outcomes, quality of life, and social attainment among adult survivors of neuroblastoma: A report from the St. Jude Lifetime Cohort
Cancer Jan 29, 2020
Wilson CL, Brinkman TM, Cook C, et al. - Researchers examined long-term survivors of neuroblastoma, focusing on chronic disease, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), emotional distress, and social attainment among these people. Using a modified version of the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (version 4.03), they graded chronic health conditions among 136 ≥ 10-year neuroblastoma survivors (median age was 31.9 years) and 272 community controls (median age was 34.7 years). Employing the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form Health Survey and the Brief Symptom Inventory-18, the evaluation of HRQOL and emotional distress was done. On average, 8.5 grade 1 to 5 conditions, were experienced by survivors by the age of 35 years, which was higher compared with the average for controls. A higher prevalence of any pulmonary, auditory, gastrointestinal, neurological, or renal condition, and more probability of experiencing poor physical HRQOL and symptoms of anxiety and somatization, and a less chance of living independently or marrying was observed among survivors vs controls. Since neuroblastoma survivors demonstrated a high burden of chronic diseases as well as the links of these morbidities with decreased HRQOL and social attainment, therefore, screening and interventions that afford opportunities to optimize health are crucial among these people.
