Clinical validation of a pressure-standardized compression mammography system
European Journal of Radiology Jun 30, 2018
den Boer D, et al. - In this retrospective study, a pressure-standardized compression mammography (PSCM) system, aimed at reducing discomfort and pain by applying the same pressure to every breast, independent of breast size, was validated. For this analysis, mammograms of 39 subjects acquired with a conventional force-standardized compression mammography (FSCM) technique and intra-individually compared them to mammograms acquired on a checkup visit with PSCM technique were retrospectively studied. Findings suggested that using PSCM could reduce patient discomfort and pain during mammographic compression compared to conventional FSCM as a result of lower average pressure. Researchers found that standardized pressure might provide a more constant image quality, which could improve diagnostic performance.
