Clinical similarities between influenza A and B in children: A single-center study, 2017/18 season, Korea
BMC Pediatrics Dec 13, 2019
Oh YN, et al. - Since the global burden of seasonal influenza on medical care was one of the greatest in the pediatric population, researchers conducted this retrospective study to compare the clinical features and characteristics of infections with influenza A or B during the 2017/18 epidemic season at a tertiary referral hospital. Participants in the study were children treated for influenza as inpatients or outpatients at the Department of Pediatrics, Chungbuk National University Hospital, Cheongju, Korea). For this investigation, they collected and reviewed data regarding clinical features, diagnoses, laboratory results, and vaccination histories. Throughout the study period, 128 influenza A patients and 109 influenza B patients were reported. The mean age of influenza B patients was considerably higher than that of influenza A patients. The most common manifestation of influenza followed by respiratory symptoms was the fever. No single symptom was specifically related to either type of influenza. Overall clinical similarities between influenza A and B were found with no less clinical significance or severity of influenza B relative to influenza A. Both types of influenza should be given equal levels of awareness and attention.
