Clinical role of vitamin D in prognosis of otitis media with effusion
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Dec 07, 2017
Akcan FA, et al. - An inquiry was set up with regard to the clinical role of Vitamin D in the prognosis of otitis media with effusion. A link was exhibited between vitamin D and otitis media with effusion development. Additionally, the effects of vitamin D were illustrated on otitis media with effusion prognosis. A marked connection was disclosed between 25(OH)Vitamin D deficiency and follow-up outcomes of otitis media with effusion.
Methods
- This trial was performed at the Otolaryngology Department in Duzce University, Turkey.
- Children who were diagnosed with Otitis media with effusion between September 2016 and February 2017 were examined as a part of the study group.
- Control group consisted of the children who underwent circumcision or inguinal hernia repair operations that ascertained with ENT examination that they did not exhibite any sign of otitis media.
- After 3 months of follow-up without any treatment, unresolved cases who were accepted as chronic otitis media with effusion underwent surgery under general anesthesia for ventilation tube application.
- An evaluation was performed of the study and control groups on the basis od the serum 25(OH)Vitamin D levels at the end of 3 months, with < 15 ng/mL being accepted as vitamin D deficiency.
- Researchers then compared the results with the control group in terms of vitamin D levels.
- They carried out subgroup analysis focusing on the complete recovery otitis media with effusion and chronic otitis media with effusion.
Results
- The study group consisted of 174 children with otitis media with effusion and the control group comprised of 80 patients.
- After a 3-months follow up, complete recovery was reported in 108 (62%) out of 174 patients with otitis media with effusion.
- The results displayed that 66 out of 174 children had persistent diseases and underwent ventilation tube insertion after a 3-months follow-up.
- The mean 25(OH)Vitamin D level was discovered to be 18.98 ± 10.60 in otitis media with effusion group and 28.07 ± 14.10 in control group.
- This variation was found to be statistically marked between the study and control group (p < 0.001).
- The report of vitamin D deficiency was displayed in 33 out of 66 patients (50.0%) in chronic otitis media with effusion group.
- On the other hand, this deficiency was noted in 35 out of 108 patients (32.4%) in complete recovery otitis media with effusion group (p=0.021).
- The rate of 25(OH)Vitamin D deficiency was disclosed to be 25% in control group which varied statistically from chronic otitis media with effusion and recovery chronic otitis media with effusion groups (p=0.006).
