Clinical prognostic factors and outcome in pediatric osteosarcoma: Effect of delay in local control and degree of necrosis in a multidisciplinary setting in Lebanon
Journal of Global Oncology Apr 10, 2019
Abou Ali B, et al. - In this retrospective review, researchers focused on the clinical features and outcomes of 38 patients treated for pediatric osteosarcoma between 2001 and 2012 at a single institution in Lebanon. A uniform three-drug chemotherapy regimen was administered to all patients, that included cisplatin, doxorubicin, and methotrexate. In cases with metastatic disease and/or poor degree of tumor necrosis (< 90%), an adjuvant treatment regimen including added ifosfamide and etoposide was administered. Participants were followed-up for a median duration of 61 months (range, 8 to 142 months). Compared to treatment outcomes of pediatric osteosarcoma in developed countries, similar survival was reported for this condition treated in a multidisciplinary cancer center in Lebanon. Worse outcome was reported in relation to delay in local control. Poor degree of necrosis at the time of local control was identified as the only statistically significant inferior outcome predictor.
