Clinical predictors for poor quality of life in patients with covert hepatic encephalopathy
Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology Apr 10, 2019
Labenz C, et al. - Due to the time consuming nature of testing for impaired quality of life, researchers identified simple clinical predictors for poor quality of life in patients with covert hepatic encephalopathy (CHE). A total of 139 in- and outpatient cirrhotic patients were enrolled without a history of overt hepatic encephalopathy. Findings revealed that CHE has been detected in 51 (36.7%) patients. In patients with CHE, a history of falls and female gender were related to impaired health-related quality of life (HrQoL). These data indicate that to improve HRQoL and ultimately prognosis, a history of falls should be considered as an indication of treatment in patients with CHE.
