Clinical predictors and outcomes of patients with pericardial effusion in chronic kidney disease
Clinical Cardiology Jun 20, 2018
Ravi V, et al. - Researchers investigated predictors and prognostic impact of pericardial effusion in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, presuming clinical and biochemical parameters can predict pericardial effusion in CKD patients. They tested this hypothesis in hospitalized adult patients with CKD stage 4, 5, or end-stage renal disease diagnosed with pericardial effusion (test) and same-stage CKD patients without effusion (controls) enrolled in this retrospective nested case-control design. They found that in the detection of moderate to large pericardial effusion, hypocalcemia may be useful. The factors that could independently predict any pericardial effusion were serum potassium, serum corrected calcium, and admission heart rate. No relation seemed to exist between pericardial effusion and adverse outcomes in these patients.
