Clinical parameters predicting tonsillar malignancy
European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology Mar 11, 2020
Fellner A, et al. - In this retrospective chart review, researchers assessed the presenting symptoms of patients who had tonsillectomy for unilateral tonsillar enlargement (UTE) and identified parameters that are correlated with an increased risk for malignancy in order to better determine and refine current management protocol. The sample consisted of adult patients (n = 41; median age was 53 years) with UTE who had tonsillectomy between January 1, 2006, and December 31, 2016. The statistically significant results in the malignancy group were also found to be lymphadenopathy, throat pain, the suspicious appearance of tonsillar mucosa, and hard consistency. UTE alone should not be viewed as an indicator of tonsillectomy as an incidental finding since the risk of malignancy is small and the morbidity is important. They recommend integrating the above-mentioned clinical parameters in the decision-making process, which in the malignant group have been shown to be substantially more frequent.
